Varuna: The Writers’ House

24 June, 2007

Varuna Writers’ House, in the Blue Mountains (NSW, Australia) is a residence for writers. Writers stay from 1 to 4 weeks. They have the great experience of working uninterrupted and not having to spend time on the mundane tasks such as cleaning, shopping and cooking.

Some residential writers are sponsored in some way; others fund their stay.

Varuna also runs a number of writing events for the community, such as writing workshops and manuscript assessments. The Varuna staff organise the Katoomba section of the Sydney Writers’ Festival, held in May each year.

Varuna was formerly the home of famed Australian writer, Eleanor Dark, who wrote many novels, including Timeless Land and Return to Coolami.

Meaning Varuna? It has a website. It also has a blog for people who have been residents there. Marsha
